The Mysterious Island

Autor Jules Verne
en Limba Engleză Paperback
Jules Gabriel Verne (February 8, 1828 - March 24, 1905) was a French author who pioneered the science fictiongenre. He is best known for his novels Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), A Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873). Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travels before air travel and practical submarines were invented, and before practical means of space travel had been devised. He is the second most translated author in the world (after Agatha Christie). Some of his books have also been made into live-action and animated films and television shows. Verne is often referred to as the "Father of Science Fiction," a title sometimes shared with Hugo Gernsback and H. G. Wells. -wikipedia

The Mysterious Island presents the same characters as those from In Search of the Castaways and is also the sequel to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Taking place during the American Civil War, the story starts when five northern prisoners of war decide to escape to the South Pacific by hijacking a balloon. Cyrus Smith, a railroad engineer in the Union, Neb, Cyrus’s servant, Bonadventure Pencroff, a sailor, Harbert Brown, Pencroff’s dependent, and Gedéon Spilett, a journalist, join forces by traveling to an uncharted island in the South Pacific. After crash-landing on a volcanic island, the group is able to locate its latitude and longitude, start a fire, find nourishment, build a house, and construct a ship. They name the island Lincoln Island after the American president. The plot becomes knotted when the group finds a message in a bottle that leads them to Ayrton, a character from In Search of the Castaways. After bringing him back to Lincoln Island, Ayrton’s former crew of pirates reaches the island and fights with them. The group receives unexpected help who reveals himself to be the key to the story and the source of other mysterious events such as Cyrus Smith’s survival from the fall from the balloon and the inexplicable appearance of the tool box.

Notă biografică

Jules Verne (February 8, 1828- March 24, 1905) was a French writer. He was one of the first authors to write science fiction. He was born in the city of Nantes, France. His father was a lawyer, and at the beginning, Verne wanted to study law as well. When he was nineteen, he started writing long pieces of literature, but his father wanted him to earn money as a lawyer, not as a writer. In 1847, his father sent him to Paris to start studying law. In 1848, Jules Verne, on a visit home, fell in love, but the girl's parents did not want her to marry him. Verne was depressed when he heard that the girl had been married to someone else - a rich, older man. In his stories, Jules Verne often writes about women married to people they do not love. He returned to Paris to find it on the verge of revolution: the French Revolution of 1848 deposed the king, and Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte was elected as the first president of the Republic of France. Verne continued to study law until 1851, but all the time he was writing and meeting with other authors and artists. Finally, in 1852, he decided to give up being a lawyer, and become a full-time professional writer instead. His father was very unhappy with this decision, but Verne was stubborn and strong-minded, so he went ahead with his plans. Verne went to Paris to try to find success. At first, he did not find any fame. Over time, he became a fan of science, while becoming well-known for his writing. His love of science and writing led him to write stories and novels that are now called "science fiction". Many people say Jules Verne was the creator of the science fiction genre.
