The Mysterious Island

Autor Jules Verne
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 6 aug 2017
This book is the second volume of the three volumes entitled Dropped from the Clouds, The Abandoned, and The Secret of the Island. After flying in stormy weather for several days, the group crash-lands on a cliff-bound, volcanic, unknown (and fictitious) island, described as being located at 34 57 S 150 30 W, about 2,500 kilometres (1,600 mi) east of New Zealand. (In reality, the closest island is Marotiri, located at 27 55 S 143 26 W. In location and description though, the phantom island Ernest Legouve Reef may correspond to the rock that is left of the mysterious island at the end of the novel.) They name it "Lincoln Island" in honor of their president, Abraham Lincoln. With the knowledge of the brilliant engineer Smith, the five are able to sustain themselves on the island, producing fire, pottery, bricks, nitroglycerin, iron, a simple electric telegraph, a home on a stony cliffside called "Granite House," and even a seaworthy ship. They also manage to figure out their geographical location. Verne was born to bourgeois parents in the seaport of Nantes, where he was trained to follow in his father's footsteps as a lawyer, but quit the profession early in life to write for magazines and the stage. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages Extraordinaires, a widely popular series of scrupulously researched adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Around the World in Eighty Days. Verne has been the second most-translated author in the world since 1979, ranking between the English-language writers Agatha Christie and William Shakespeare; he was probably was the most-translated during the 1960s and 1970s. He has sometimes been called "The Father of Science Fiction," a title also often given to H. G. Wells and Hugo Gernsback."

Notă biografică

Jules Verne wrote and published over 100 novels, short stories, nonfiction books, essays, and plays-some posthumously. He was born on a small river island in Nantes, France, on February 8th, 1828. His parents, Pierre Verne and Sophie Allotte de La Fuÿe, sent Jules to Paris in 1848 to follow in his father's footsteps and become a lawyer. Instead, he developed a love of all things literary and fashioned himself into a prolific and versatile writer. His first novel, Five Weeks in a Balloon, was published in 1863 by publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel and launched Verne's popular career with the Voyages Extraordinaires series of adventure novels, many of which established key elements of the science fiction genre. He was an instant success in France and other parts of Europe and would become a respected literary giant around the world later in the twentieth century. Verne died on March 24th, 1905, in Amiens, France. Verne's most famous works include Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872). Verne is one of the most translated authors in the world, second only to William Shakespeare, and still holds the prestigious title, "the Father of Science Fiction."

Descriere

Descriere de la o altă ediție sau format:
The Mysterious Island presents the same characters as those from In Search of the Castaways and is also the sequel to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Taking place during the American Civil War, the story starts when five northern prisoners of war decide to escape to the South Pacific by hijacking a balloon. Cyrus Smith, a railroad engineer in the Union, Neb, Cyrus’s servant, Bonadventure Pencroff, a sailor, Harbert Brown, Pencroff’s dependent, and Gedéon Spilett, a journalist, join forces by traveling to an uncharted island in the South Pacific. After crash-landing on a volcanic island, the group is able to locate its latitude and longitude, start a fire, find nourishment, build a house, and construct a ship. They name the island Lincoln Island after the American president. The plot becomes knotted when the group finds a message in a bottle that leads them to Ayrton, a character from In Search of the Castaways. After bringing him back to Lincoln Island, Ayrton’s former crew of pirates reaches the island and fights with them. The group receives unexpected help who reveals himself to be the key to the story and the source of other mysterious events such as Cyrus Smith’s survival from the fall from the balloon and the inexplicable appearance of the tool box.
