Research Needs in Dam Safety: Proceedings of the First Conference, New Delhi, India, 3-6 December 1991
Editat de Money Magazineen Limba Engleză Hardback – 1992
Natural causes like floods, rock slides, earthquakes, deterioration of foundations/structures etc. can cause dam failures. Study of actual failure of dams leads to better understanding of causes of failure and helps to work out suitable modifications in dam engineering including investigations, design, construction, operation and maintenance. As the knowledge is gained and the technology improved, the structures built in earlier times once considered safe may also require modifications.
Contents: Foundation problems, seepage & grounting; Innovations/Techniques for geological characterization of existing dam foundations; Fill dams; Concrete & masonry dams; Hydraulic & control structures; Earthquake considerations; Instrumentation;

Dams have been built from ancient times extending over a period of thousand years nurturing civilisations highly dependent on irrigation by harnessing the available Water Resources. During the last one century, there has been a spurt in dam construction and more dams have been constructed practically in every part of this world for meeting growing needs of people. But there have been certain failures of dams causing damage to life and property. With advancement of technology in recent years, science of dam engineering has developed to a considerable extent with the evolving of better and sound designs, use of new construction materials as well as modern methods of construction. The question that is being posed is whether all risks for dam failures have been eliminated in the light of recent technological advancement, thanks to advanced analytical techniques made possible with the use of computers and they have become zero risk ventures considering huge capital investment involved? The answer is definitely in the negative. Safety of dams is dependent on various factors which require to be analysed constantly and measures evolved for ensuring their safety for continued accrual of the benefits to mankind for as long a time as possible. Natural causes like floods, rock slides, earthquakes, deterioration of foundations/structures etc. can cause dam failures. Study of actual failure of dams will lead to better understanding of causes of failure to work out suitable modification in dam engineering including investigations, design, construction, operation and maintenance. As the knowledge is gained and the technology, improved, the structures built in earlier times once considered safe may alsorequire modifications. Conferences provide good fora to professionals to be aware of the advances in the technology for application in day to day work, by interaction, and exchange of experiences. In this context, the First Conference on Research Needs in Dam Safety was organised by the committee for International Commission on Large Dams, India (INCOLD) as well as Central Board of Irrigation & Power. It was sponsored both by the International Commission on Large Dams (INCOLD) and the International Water Resources Association (IWRA).
