Ghost-Haunted Land

Autor Declan Long
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 12 mai 2020
Ghost-haunted land is the first book-length study of post-Troubles art. It highlights artists who have produced powerful, distinctive work that reflects on the legacies of the Troubles and represents the strangeness of Northern Ireland's changing landscapes, which are marked by signs of enduring division and haunted by spectres of the past. The book addresses developments in video, photography, painting, sculpture, performance and more. It offers detailed analyses of key works by artists based in Ireland and beyond - notably 2014 Turner Prize winner Duncan Campbell and internationally acclaimed filmmaker and photographer Willie Doherty. The art explored here is attentive to regional circumstances in Northern Ireland, but it has also developed in dialogue with the international art of the period. Consequently, the book examines it in the context of both local transformations and global operations, with key reference points coming from broader debates about contemporary art's predicament today, its place and purpose in the world, and the politics and aesthetics of its dominant forms. This paperback edition includes a new preface that reflects on the situation in Northern Ireland following the Brexit referendum of 2016 via Cathy Wilkes's exhibition for the 2019 Venice Biennale and Anna Burns's 2018 Man Booker Prize-winning novel Milkman.
