Descriere
Greater awareness by owners and appropriate first aid by veterinarians in the field has lead to greater survival rates amongst horses needing emergency treatment in recent years. Diseases that in the past have required humane euthanasia can now be treated when presented in the early stages.
This book aims to enable veterinarians to improve the outcome for all equine patients presented for emergency treatment. The first part of the book covers emergency medicine by each body system, and includes chapters on toxicology and neonatal emergencies. Each chapter contains a step-by-step description of common procedures performed on an emergency basis as well as clinical features and treatment of important diseases.
As successful recovery also depends on the critical care given the second section of the book is dedicated to this area. It covers all areas of treatment from monitoring, fluid therapy, inotrope and pressor therapy, sedation and analgesia, nutritional support, care of post-operative colic patients, the pregnant mare, recumbent horse, and neonates.
Equine Emergency and Critical Care Medicine contains 908 color illustrations. It is of value as a ready resource for equine specialists, non-specialist veterinary practitioners and students in veterinary medicine.
